Cool, androgynous, bohemian, minimalist – are just a few words this Moroccan stylist and fashion blogger can be described by. Sofia El Arabi was born and raised in Casablanca; her label, Bakchic, has a chic bohemian and boyish cool girl feel to it. Bakchic was launched by Sofia, who wanted to share with girls her new direction and vision that was all about wearing one-off, anti-industrial, original and unique pieces which couldn’t be found anywhere. Carrying the message “Arab is the new cool”, Sofia designs for women from every walk of life.
Her love with fashion began early; growing up in a relatively strict household, Sofia used to sneakily watch Fashion TV, ”With exception of holidays, It was completely forbidden to watch TV”, she says, “Until this day, I still smile whenever I watch Fashion TV remembering those days.”

When it comes to her work and creative process, Sofia is heavily inspired by the Berber women, “I’ve read a lot of books and studied every thing about them. I have gone to live with them and fallen in love with their personality. These are strong, clever and proud women.” Her love for her country is endless, Morocco is her muse; be it the crowded streets of Casablanca where she observes passers by or tiny villages where no tourist can be found. One of the distinct features about Sofia’s work is her recurring use of “The Arabic Jacket” from her collection Alif.

In the end we asked Sofia for sartorial advice, to which she replied, “Never match the bag and shoes. Add a touch of eccentricity in the accessories and be yourself!”
