Iconic New York lies at the heart of Michael Kors’ AW 18/19 collection, that was showcased at thee Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Centre. Even the ‘Play Bill’ invitations and artwork, designed by legendary theatre-poster artist James McMullan, the show celebrates the energy and creativity of the city that has long been the designer’s home and inspiration.

“I wanted the show to be a love letter to New York,” says Michael Kors. “I’m inspired by everything about the city- the electricity, the speed, the diversity, the individuality, and of course the art and food and fashion. So much of New York is iconic, from the architecture to the theatre to the faces, and anyone who’s ever been here has their own New York story. For me to show at Lincoln Centre, in a building designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen, with artwork specifically created by James McMullan- that’s a New York story I wanted to share with everyone.”

The collection was an eclectic mix, of wardrobe icons, juxtaposed with bold tartans and stripes, romantic florals and dots. With the main sources of inspirations coming from the Fair Isles, and Argyles, with the use of graphic leopard and zebra prints, giving it, a sleek city feel and image. Menswear tailoring was a combination of soft ruffles and crisp sportswear, with a broad range of colours used. The use of modern twists on iconic pieces, saw the slouchy trench and elongated pea coat feature in the collection with the wide-leg trouser jeans, and Foulard Pyjamas.

Michael Kors take on his iconic accessories, sees shoes with Personality- the pointy kitten heel, the stomper boot, as well as the opulent shower slide, the chunky 70’s platform. Paired with bags with attitude and charm, such as the luxe shopping bag, the tailored jellyroll, the sleek top-handle frame bag, to the utility shoulder bag.

In true Michael Kors style, his bold New York show was a star-studded affair, including Blake Lively, Emily Blunt, Zendaya, Jourdan Dunn and Jessica Kahawaty, which further cements his name and style, as iconic.
