The art fair continues to define itself as the leading gateway and venue for top-tier contemporary art, in China and throughout the Asian region. Many artworks from internationally renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor and Yayoi Kusama, as well as cutting-edge public artworks by both Asian and international artists were created especially for the venue, or exhibited for the first time in the region. The art jewel exhibition, offered by Cindy Chao The Art Jewel, was an unprecedented element included in the fair this year.

Alongside forty leading galleries from around the globe, Cindy Chao The Art Jewel ‘Out of Bounds’ special exhibition presented its founding artist’s signature works. All selected art jewels aimed to signify Cindy Chao’s philosophy of challenging the limit of conventional jewellery crafting, as well as breaking the geological, ethnical, and cultural boundaries through creativity and craftsmanship in artistic fine jewellery.

‘Out of Bounds’ is a rare occasion where the brand’s Masterpieces were shown to the public. The seven Masterpieces on view, mostly loaned from collectors, are specifically selected by Cindy Chao to be brooches.

Given its more voluminous nature, brooch is one category that allows Chao tremendous freedom to demonstrate all her fantastical imagination, and her quest, in refined and intricate craftsmanship beyond the boundary. Many of her most thought-provoking creations come in the form of brooches. One special highlight of the exhibition is the 20cm x 45cm Majestic Beauty Fan featuring a butterfly brooch. Designed for a project for Forevermark, the Fan is paved with 2,399 diamonds totalling to 310 carats, and a true piece of diamond decorative art.

Cindy Chao’s works have been inducted by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural history, and have been displayed in Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Masterpiece London and Biennale des Antiquaire in Paris. The highly selective curatorial style of the West Bund Art & Design resonates with Cindy Chao’s creative principle and ideology.

The mutual synergy has brought together this unconventional fusion of arts. “I am confident that this special exhibition will provide the visitors a whole new vision on diversity of artistic creations and thus broaden their horizon as to what art can possibly be”, says Cindy Chao.
